Idol Makers, Inc.

We live in an amazing time in history. Across the world we have become expert idol makers. In every culture and religion the art of idol making is going on and being perfected.

For some it's the making of false gods, religious symbols created by men.

Others invent whole religions based on the creation of a new god, and gather huge followings to worship the gods they have made.

In other places the worship of men becomes a finely developed religion. A movie star, a rock singer, a celebrity, a model, an athlete. We have elevated the art of worshipping men and women for nothing more than how they look, talk or sing.

I don't even have time to mention the skills we have developed in idolizing our "stuff".

Still others redefine the Christian faith and recreate the God who already is. Idol making in the Christian world has become a fine art. Many have mastered it, and taken it to a new all time low.

In the bible the Jews of the Old Testament would make idols AND worship God just to cover their bases. This problem shows up in Genesis and continues throughout the bible.

In our time it's more subtle. It sounds something like this, "My god's not like that." or, "My god is a loving god, he wouldn't ____" or, "I couldn't worship a god like that! Why I don't think god is like that at all. I think ___."

In our zeal to have a sanitary, safe, comfortable and politically correct god we have redefined the God of the bible and have made hundreds of little idols that aren't God at all.

The challenge of our time is for us to be students of the bible so we are worshipping the God who is, not who we want him to be.

This is my personal challenge as well. I am easily led away from the God who is. I must constantly take my mind and heart back to the bible to see Him clearly so I don't wander off.

Psa 148:1 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights!
Psa 148:2 Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts!
Psa 148:3 Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all stars of light!
Psa 148:4 Praise Him, highest heavens, And the waters that are above the heavens!
Psa 148:5 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created.
Psa 148:6 He has also established them forever and ever; He has made a decree which will not pass away.
Psa 148:7 Praise the LORD from the earth, Sea monsters and all deeps;
Psa 148:8 Fire and hail, snow and clouds; Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;
Psa 148:9 Mountains and all hills; Fruit trees and all cedars;
Psa 148:10 Beasts and all cattle; Creeping things and winged fowl;
Psa 148:11 Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth;
Psa 148:12 Both young men and virgins; Old men and children.
Psa 148:13 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven.
Psa 148:14 And He has lifted up a horn for His people, Praise for all His godly ones; Even for the sons of Israel, a people near to Him. Praise the LORD!

Greetings from Singapore,

We have Singapore Idol and Mammon as two of the most popular "religion" over here. May the Lord enable us to be the light and salt in this wicked world.

God bless,
and looking forward to read more of your pastoral reflections.

I think that sometimes we make Pastors idols or "pope" I know you know what I am trying to say! It is as we see Christ as Paul saw christ that we become "real" or "honest to God" I am reading a book called Self-Abandonment That is giving God His due right to our whole being.

Thanks for your comment. I agree, the goal of serving God is so that all eyes will be on God, not on us. It's unfortunate that some have fallen into the "celebrity" trap. We are only serving God so others will see Him and be drawn to Him. We miss our best when we do anything else.
